During our visit to the Centro Martin Luther King in Marianao, the first Black working-class community in Havana, we had the opportunity to learn about the center’s work in education, faith, and socialist culture. Popular educator and theologian affirmed, “The leadership of the revolution understood that it wasn’t only about solving material needs, but that minds needed to be changed. That is the key to the success of the Cuban Revolution.” The Cuban Revolution has invested resources, time, and energy in cultivating ideas, deepening culture, and strengthening Cubans’ sense of self as an emancipatory practice.
